“Thai Union Commits to 100% Sustainable Tuna, But Can It Get There?” – Sustainable Brands – December 13, 2016

On December 13, 2016 Sustainable Brands reported that Thai Union pledged to achieve a minimum of 75% of sustainably sourced branded tuna by 2020 and eventually 100%.

According to the article, “Thai Union defines sustainably sourced tuna as tuna from fisheries that are either already certified according to the standards of the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) or are involved in a Fishery Improvement Project (FIP) that is working towards achieving standards required for MSC certification. MSC certification is widely recognized by global experts as the best mark of seafood sustainability.“

In order to achieve the goal, Thai Union will invest $90 million in activities to increase the supply of sustainable tuna, including the establishment of 11 new FIPs.
